At the Back of the North Wind
By George MacDonald

This short book is a must read for children, a children’s book designed to stir imagination, prompt courage at needed moments and share truth about human goodness. This short book should also be read by adults. Adults need to be reminded that truth is found in every age, that it is better to give than receive, honor father and mother and old people through word and example. It is better to defend those who have no one to love them and watch over them. It is better to love neighbor, persons of all classes, races and gender. It is our duty to comfort the sick and even those with a serious addiction. The hero of this book, Diamond, did these good acts because he experienced the grace from our Lord. The Holy Spirit spoke and Diamond said yes to Christ. He became a servant to others in word and deed, a little Christ.

This great work written by MacDonald and published in 1871 later influenced C.S. Lewis, Tolkien and many others. The first thing to note is that this book, ordered for me by my friends at Veritas Books Halifax, is not really an old book. Rather it is a true book, a book of truths that people need to read today not tomorrow. Our culture is intoxicated with values that are self-destructive, new things are thought to be always true, the pursuit of fame, glory, riches, pleasure and sex is promoted as the course to follow. These idols are not good for us, peace will not be ours unless we experience the great reversal. It is better to give than receive, suffer for Good rather than bask in escapism and pleasure.  We need moments, like children, to relax and escape from routine and maybe even meet the North Wind, a Marian figure helping us sort out good from evil at different stages of our growth.

The hero of our book, Diamond, says no to relativism and yes to all life. He says yes to love and no to death and self interest. He really lives in the bloodstained steps of Christ. He seeks the good of others always. He is friend of God and man.
